Through mystical imagery and soft lighting, my work explores the visual metaphors of the human condition that exist in nature. Whether through oil paint or graphite, the play of an exaggerated subject focus with a dreamy and undefined background suggests the boundless depth of the existential questions we often face in life. Light is always the most important component, as it not only offers even just small glimpses of hope, but it implies its opposite- the reality of darkness. To have true homeostasis, both must exist in balance. It is within those spaces of darkness that I am particularly moved, as those are the moments that become the most transformative times in life. The silver lining of that darkness, or pain, is that it’s the only element of existence that every single human being can relate to- it is how we know we are alive. If I am able to capture that unity in my work, I am successful.
