Artist’s Statement: I look at the world around me and define my interpretation in various media. My creative challenge is to explore new and interesting ways to portray my subject, which may be realistic or abstract. I study the Impressionists’ color, German Expressionists’ line quality, and Modern Printmakers’ use of negative space and new techniques. My passion for printmaking lies in the endless variety of techniques for manipulating materials to express my ideas. I can build the image in stages and incorporate nearly all mark making elements in a print. Recently I have been concentrating on collagraphs, which are a
collage of materials that are inked and printed on an etching press. I incorporate textures and forms drawn from or using natural materials impressed in thick rag paper printed with thin layers of ink. I enjoy monotypes which are a more direct painterly technique. I may add pastel, inks, or handmade paper to enhance some images. I truly enjoy the process of making the plates and discovering the textures and colors that will bring the image to life. I continue to draw figure studies in charcoal, conte, and pastel. Currently, I am developing a body of plein air landscape paintings focusing on Pennsylvania open space, farms, and historic architecture in oil on canvas and photography. I am focused on capturing a moment in time and allowing it to linger.
