Joanne has been painting for 36 years. At first it was a means to relax, after a challenging day of
teaching high school. She started by experimenting with oil paints. Painting landscapes of places
traveled to during summer vacations.
It wasn’t long before she was anxious to learn more, so she subscribed to Artist Magazines and started
reading numerous book and videos on painting techniques. Little by little, she expanded her knowledge
base and experimented with just about every medium available; watercolor, acrylics, pastels, charcoal,
colored pencils, ink, alcohol ink and sometimes spray paint.
Currently, her favorite medium is acrylics. Her subjects include landscapes, seascapes, animals, and still
life creations. The paintings are mostly realistic; because she likes to paint what she sees. Having
traveled the world, she had a very lengthy supply of places and things she’d like to paint. Many of these
paintings are created after refreshing her memory with photos she has taken.
Painting locally, en plein air, is an activity she also enjoys. Berks County, Pennsylvania has many
beautiful landscapes, just waiting for a brush to capture. Sometimes she paints with friends; but,
painting alone is fine, too.
Since retiring in 2006, Joanne spends many hours every week creating art. Sitting in her garden for
hours a day, painting, is actually a fun activity. Sometimes the neighborhood kids stop by to join her.
Her son’s bedroom is her studio and materials are ready and waiting 24/7. It’s so convenient and
relaxing to just dive in and PAINT.
